Finnish horror-comedy Red Snow (Punaista lunta) is set to premiere this November, and it’s already generating buzz as one of the most uniquely absurd and darkly entertaining films of the year. Directed by Ilja Rautsi, the film follows Johanna, a 16-year-old emo teen, whose dreams of a vampire take a bizarre turn when she encounters Martti, a beer-bellied, balding bloodsucker who wears a Santa suit to terrorize families. The film is starred by renowned Finnish actors Hannu-Pekka Björkman, Anni Iikkanen, Tommi Korpela, Krista Kosonen and Kari Hietalahti.
A Vampire Santa? Only in Finland
Red Snow takes the traditional vampire myth and flips it on its head. Instead of a suave, brooding bloodsucker, we get Martti – a middle-aged, out-of-shape vampire who dons a Santa Claus costume. Potentially, hilarious AND unsettling. It’s a fresh take on two iconic figures – Santa and the vamp – and merges them into something entirely new.
Why This Film Stands Out
1. A Fresh Take on Vampire Lore
Vampires have been done to death in cinema, but Red Snow breathes new life into the mythos by grounding its vampire in the absurd everyday. This subversion of expectations is what makes the film promising. It’s a reminder that neither vampires nor horror in general don’t always have to be serious.
2. Nordic Horror-Comedy at Its Best
Finland has some tradition of blending humor with horror, and Red Snow is just the latest example. If you’re a fan of films like Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale or Moonlight Sonata, Red Snow could be right up your alley. Rautsi commented on the idea of horror comedy in Variety’s interview:
This setting helps, because the whole idea of a horror comedy is tricky. You can make a horror that’s not scary or a comedy that doesn’t make you laugh. Still, together they create this hysteria, which I think matches my own relationship with Christmas perfectly. – Ilja Rautsi
3. A Holiday Horror for the Rest of Us
The holiday season is usually associated with warmth, joy, and family gatherings. Red Snow introduces a blood-thirsty vampire Santa to this family environment. It’s fair to say, this is not going to be family entertainment. It’s a darkly humorous take on the holidays: perfect for anyone who’s ever felt a little jaded by the season’s cheer.
The Trailer: A First Look at the Chaos
While the Finnish trailer for Red Snow has only just been released two weeks ago, it’s already clear Christmas chaos is coming early. Check it below:
If you’re a fan of horror-comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously, Red Snow is a film to keep on your radar. So, my fellow goblins and trolls, mark your calendars for the films release on November 20th 2026.
