It’s time for my traditional “Halloween in Helsinki” -post! Lately, I’ve been trying to come up with ways and reasonings for this blog to continue, and this post just makes it through every year with relative ease.

This year Halloween sits awkwardly on a Thursday night, which leads to activities on two different weekends: the one prior and the one after it. Therefore, this year there’s tons of Halloween themed club nights and events arranged around the Finnish capital. Here’s my attempt to pick the more elaborate and adventurous ones – enjoy!

Sat 26.10.
Biohazard Zombie event @ Hospital corridor, Lapinlahden Lähde

At this Horrorfest Helsinki’s main event, Umbrella Corporation’s guests are part of a controlled experiment, navigating eerie challenges. Upon entry, tickets are exchanged for branded badges, giving access to the Resident Evil lab filled with hidden prizes and attacking zombies. The company’s testing methods are as dangerous as they are creative.

One of Umbrella’s latest creations, a nurse-turned-zombie hybrid, now sells biohazard-themed merch, accompanied by her army of genetically engineered spiders. Guests can also take a neon Rorschach test, revealing surprising psychological insights.

The night culminates in a mind-bending light show led by zombie DJ Witchpill, mixing apocalyptic beats and flashing lights to prepare participants for the grand finale. Each guest receives 5,000 Monopoly dollars for their role in the experiment.

Inferia w/ Azatoth & I, Cursed @ Bar Loose

We can probably all agree that death metal and Halloween match quite nicely – especially here in the Nordics. Founded in 1989, INFERIA from Lahti is one of the original Finnish death/grind bands and remains active to this day. The band’s grindcore is rooted in the aggressive styles of Napalm Death, Deicide, and Cannibal Corpse, blending in their own distinctive mix of death metal and hardcore. INFERIA is known for its erotically-tinged lyrics, embodying the spirit of porndeath/grind.

35 years, 7 full-length albums, 3 EPs, a live and split album, numerous festivals, and gigs. “We brake for nobody – if it’s too fast, you’re too old.”

Viaporin Kekri @ Suomenlinna

Here in Finland, it’s not just Halloween season, it’s also our very own Kekri! These two are very reminiscent of each other, so you’ll be well off enjoying Kekri as well. Kekri is a Finnish and Karelian harvest festival celebrated in the fall, at the end of the harvest season and the cycle of the year. Kekri is traditionally celebrated with plenty of food and drink, honoring the dead and giving thanks for the harvest and the past year.

In Viapor’s kekri, based on old traditions, a common urban event suitable for this time has been created for the residents of Suomenlinna, the people of Helsinki and those who visit the beloved UNESCO World Heritage Site of Suomenlinna. Viapori’s kekri is an event full of light and Suomenlinna art, culture and flavors.

Gardens of Death – All Saints’ Day @ Helsinki Cemeteries

What would suit the Halloween spirit better as a surrounding than an actual cemetery? This All Saints’ Day event is an experience aimed at people of all ages, so mind you, families and elderly will attend – so forget about that blood soaked zombie attire. The event is organised at Hietaniemi, Malmi, Kulosaari and Östersundom cemeteries as well as Maunula Urn Cemetery.

“Come remember your late loved ones while enjoying the beauty of the candlelit cemetery. During All Saints Day, the cemeteries, these gardens of death, will bloom with light.”

Free entry.
